Rock ’n’ Roll Meets Nō Theater! – Meng Jinghui is China’s most influential and successful avant-garde theater director. He is considered the leading figure of contemporary experimental theater and has revolutionized the Chinese theater scene with his provocative and humorous style.

He previously appeared at the Lessingtage 2024 with his production Bedbug, inspired by Frank Castorf. In this »midnight version« of Genet’s The Maids (Les Bonnes, 1947)—considered a masterpiece of the theater of the absurd—three actresses rock their way through the backdrop of a wild party night: Two maids take advantage of their mistress’s absence to secretly stage a sadistic »master-and-servant game.« A psychological power struggle driven by passion and anger over the injustice of class society escalates and does not even shy away from a real assassination attempt.

Meng Jinghui takes the absurd nature of the play to the extreme: breakneck pace meets stylized physical control, ritualistic movements, and references to traditional Asian theater forms such as Peking Opera and Nō Theater.
