Melli researches femicide in literature and mythology. Tricia fights against misogynistic online hate and has experienced it firsthand. When they wonder where change can begin, they jokingly call on “the goddesses”—and, no sooner said than done, find themselves standing before the goddesses on Mount Olympus.
Demeter, Aphrodite, Athena: trapped in patriarchal structures that also dominate Mount Olympus and offer women only a few roles – muse, hetaera, porne. How to escape patriarchy? One believes in tenderness, the other in lust as a remedy, the third in revenge. In their discussion with the two mortals, a century-old theme is revealed: how do women live with a history they did not write themselves?
Golda Barton's Porneia opens up a space in which myth and the present collide in a lustful and contentious way, inviting reflection on justice, different perspectives on feminism, and the possibility of a different history: herstory instead of history.
