In the event of war, the Bundeswehr would have to “replace” 1,000 soldiers per day. Since not enough volunteers can be found for this task, conscription becomes necessary. For one thing seems certain: if war is deemed necessary, it will happen. The only question that remains is: the easy way or the hard way?
Never Again Peace is a triptych about the current societal struggle over war readiness and the question of how art responds to it. Ancient Greece serves as a testing ground and template for a world in which the noble promises of peace from the 1990s have been discredited. For Odysseus sets forth the new claim: “In war, the people speak with one voice or not at all.”
