They had long dreamed of it as a family: the move from their Hamburg city apartment to the expanse of the Marschlande should be the beginning of a new phase in their lives. But while Philipp thrives in their new routine, Britta feels increasingly isolated – lost in the stillness, cut off from herself. Then she comes across the name Abelke Bleken. Almost 500 years separate her from the woman who rebelled against the storm tides as well as against the resentment of village society – and came under fatal suspicion. As Britta traces her footsteps, past and present intertwine to form a web of dependence and freedom, defamation and resistance. What happens when an ancient story intrudes on your own life? And how much of Abelke is there in Britta herself?
