A broken jug marks the beginning of a story that tells of judicial fraud, cover-ups, violence, and hypocrisy. Mrs. Marthe appears in court, holding the broken jug in her hands. She wants to pin the blame on Ruprecht, her daughter Eve's fiancé. Judge Adam wants to pass sentence without further examination in order to get the case over with quickly. But the trial is not quite so simple. In Kleist's dark comedy, truth is the thing that interests those involved the least. Here, the aim is to maintain the status quo and secure power. But a counterforce is slowly and steadily forming, which will bring the powerful and their methods to justice.
