Our smaller venue

Come and join us at Thalia Gaußstraße – our theatre in the heart of Altona

To some people it’s a well-kept secret, for others it has long since been one of the most interesting spots in Altona: Behind the apartment buildings in the former industrial complex, progressive, powerful theatre is performed every evening across three stages.

During the day, actors, directors, set designers, costume designers, dramaturgs and musicians create and rehearse productions for the main stage at Alstertor and for Thalia Gaußstraße. Audiences can experience not only epic dramas, but also concerts performed by Altona artists, readings, tea dances, symposiums in collaboration with the University of Hamburg, youth workshops and breakfasts: sharing German bread rolls with directors from around the world. Come closer and stay a bit longer: you’ll sit just a few metres away from the actors and as you drink and eat nibbles, and the atmosphere of the ballroom invites you to dwell and exchange stories with audiences and artists. November 2015 also saw the start of ‘Embassy of Hope – Café International’ here at the theatre, in which refugees learn German, make music and form new friendships with people at the theatre and the Altona locals.

Tickets for Gaußstraße are available for the standard price of €22/10, with premieres costing €28/15. Tickets are available online at and at the theatre’s evening box office up to 60 minutes before the performance begins.

Getting here The theatre is a 15 minute walk from S-Bahnhof Altona, or take Bus 2 (every 10 minutes) to Gaußstraße station, then follow the footpath for 200m. Your ticket is valid for public transport to take you to the show and back.
