Taylor Mac is a multi-award-winning playwright, described by TimeOut NY as ‘one of the most exciting theater artists of our time’. His 24-Decade History of Popular Music uses rearrangements of popular songs from 1776 right through to modern-day America to tell the history of the United States from the perspective of marginalised groups, whose stories are often forgotten or ignored. Praised as one of the most spectacular theatre events of the decade, the originally 24-hour concert is now coming to Hamburg’s Thalia Theater in a special edition condensed to a single evening: an exuberant crash course in American culture and queer extravaganza. Incredibly entertaining, opulent and astonishing, this interactive spectacle fuses elements of musical theatre, cabaret, burlesque and drag, and draws on a diverse array of musical styles and artistic voices, from murder ballads to disco, from Walt Whitman to David Bowie. Mac will tailor the selection of songs to Hamburg’s unique history and DNA. As local ‘special guests’ he invited the traditional Hamburg Shanty choir „Windrose“ to perform with him.
