A musical, cinematic, annotated journey through 60 years of immigration in Germany.

Berlin-based author İmran Ayata and Munich theatre star and musician Bülent Kullukçu have collected and researched songs from the beginning of the 1960s through to the start of the 1990s, written by musicians who came to Germany from Turkey. They released “Songs of Gastarbeiter Vol 1”, a compilation album of 16 songs ranging from Anatolian Disco Folk to speech song. It’s the music played at parties, weddings and political events. Workers’ songs and languishing melodies. Songs from “Almanya”, the “bitter homeland”. From standing on the edge, from never arriving. Reflecting experiences of marginalisation and racism. They all offer astute observations of German society. The project hopes to raise the profile of unknown artists and to document this diverse musical culture so that it won’t be lost forever.

“This a musical treasure, perhaps the greatest that came to Germany a long time ago – most songs will immediately make you want to dance, but will also relate to the German immigrant story.” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

“A milestone in German culture” (Munich Mercury)

“The songs that up until now only existed in the collective memory of the older generation, can now achieve cult status.” (Der Spiegel)

“If there had been real German Blues, it would be found in the songs of the guest workers.” (arte)

SONGS OF GASTARBEITER
