Mary McCallum is a retired microbiologist. Every day she sits in Embankment Tube station in London to hear her late husband’s voice over the loudspeaker, warning the passengers to mind the gap at the edge of the platform. In silent conversation with her husband she goes over his death, their life together and their autistic child. She reflects on the extent to which bacterial life determines ours and the interdependency of our symbiosis. Mind the gap.
