Dakh Daughters are a dazzling music and performance group from Kyiv, who shot to international fame nine years ago following the Euromaidan protests. In their show Danse Macabre, first performed shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the six actors and singers tell the stories of Ukrainian women and how the war has affected their everyday lives, their families and their relationship to life. By combining virtuoso cross-genre compositions (a blend of ethno punk, cabaret and vaudeville) with personal stories, Dakh Daughters powerfully convey the violence of war and appeal to people’s humanity and sense of solidarity. Danse Macabre was conceived by the DAKH Center of Contemporary Art’s artistic team, who in March were given sanctuary in Vire, France. It is intended as an act of resistance, as part of an ‘artistic front’ in the war effort, that bears witness to what is happening in Ukraine.
